Transmedia Encounters emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, when urban practices of gathering and exchange shifted into digital space. While many online formats focused on passive video conferencing, the project set out to develop experimental media formats that would actively invite people into shared environments rather than positioning them as distant spectators.
Together with the LU’UM collective, two immersive broadcast formats were created using a mobile streaming setup — one hosted in the Werkstatt Gröninger Hof and another at the Patriotische Gesellschaft in Hamburg. The broadcasts combined live performances, artistic contributions, and conversations with experts and collaborators, exploring new ways of connecting physical locations with digital audiences.
Central to the project was the development of a flexible mobile streaming infrastructure. Marcelo Javier Acevedo Pardo realised and implemented the technical and spatial setup, establishing a foundation that later evolved into the FUNKFAHRRAD concept. Through its hybrid approach, Transmedia Encounters investigated how digital media can extend spatial practice and create new forms of participatory presence during times of physical distance.
